Christmas shopping helped generate an uplift of +53.2% in Month-on-Month traffic into Australian stores in December, while the Year-on-Year picture was little changed from 2016.  Australian households are under high levels of debt pressure, which is likely to have fuelled the success of festive price promotions across the country, according to Business Insider.

Chinese retailers enjoyed a Month-on-Month traffic rise of +6% in December while Year-on-Year traffic was down.

There are signs of a modest slow down in the world’s second-biggest economy amid a government crack down on financial risks, reports Reuters. However, China’s retail sales and industrial output grew at a steady pace in November and December, while fixed asset investment cooled slightly.

Japanese stores and malls have enjoyed a healthy +2.5% increase in traffic for the year. However, December proved a challenging month with Year-on-Year traffic in negative territory.

That said, retailers can be assured that economic indicators are positive heading into 2018. The unemployment rate in Japan edged down to 2.7% in November, marking the lowest jobless rate since November 1993. Prospects remain first-rate for physicalr etail in India, and the year’s total retail traffic performance shows a riseof +3%. December traffic figures shot up +24.6% Month-on-Month, while YoYtraffic slipped by -4.4%.

‘Some glitter but no gold’ is how the British Retail Consortium described the UK’s Christmas trading period for 2017. Shopper traffic dipped slightly Year-on-Year for December, but rose by +14.7% Month-on-Month.

December saw brisk trade in French stores with Month-on-Month traffic up +23.5%, although 2016’s bumper December proved hard to match. Business confidence has just reached a 10-year high in France on the back of higher production expectations. Similarly, consumer confidence is high thanks to the country’s strong economic outlook, says FocusEconomics.

December in Portugal saw bumper trading, with stores achieving an excellent Year-on-Year traffic uplift of +4.2%, and MOM traffic up +20.1%. For the year, Portugal has seen traffic edge up by +0.5%.

Spanish retailers have had an outstanding year with traffic into stores and malls up +1.8% for the year. Christmas promotions and in-store theatre drew the crowds, resulting in a marked increase in Month-on-Month retail traffic (up +19.3%) and a healthy +6.3% rise in Year-on-Year traffic for December.

Year-on-Year shopper visits declined slightly in December, with Poland playing catch up after 2016’s good Christmas performance. Traffic may also have been affected by the Polish preference for saving shopping sprees until January sales. A KPMG survey found that nearly 90% of Polish consumers opt for bargain shopping during post-Christmas sales.
